Trial (aka Evaluation) Licenses
Symantec issued Trial Licenses will no longer work with Arellia products. You can easily obtain a Trial License for any Arellia products from the portal, which is outlined in the steps below.
The information/instructions in this KB are applicable to regular production licenses issued through Arellia. Symantec issued production licenses should be installed through SIM and may require activation.
Arellia licenses (for 6.x and 7.0) are managed through the certificates snapin in the MMC (Installing/Removing). The folder to put the licenses in may be the Altiris or the Arellia folder depending on the messages in the log file. See this KB article for details.
| Arellia 7.1 Solution Changes With the release of the Arellia 7.1 solutions, a new page in the SMP console allows Arellia licenses to be managed inside the Arellia Security Manger or Symantec SMP console - Licensing Update in Arellia 7.1 Solutions |
Activating Symantec Licenses
If after installation your Symantec issued license has a status of ActivationRequired you will need to Activate the license using the Arellia portal. Once you are logged in navigate to http://portal.arellia.com/License/Activate and follow the instructions. Activation involves copying your Symantec licence certificate text into a web page so that it can be re-issued. Once re-issued this new license can be installed using the Arellia Security Manager console.
Requesting Trial Licenses
To obtain trial licenses for Arellia products (beyond the default 10 clients for 10 days which all SMP solutions have when a solution is first installed) you must be registered with Arellia.
- Detailed instructions here or follow the general instructions below.
- General Instructions
- Go to portal.arellia.com
- Register by clicking on the Sign In button. This goes to the Window Live logon page.
- Either use an existing Windows Live account if available or create a new one.
- Then return to portal.arellia.com and complete the registration information.
- Then you will get an email with a link which you will need to click to finish the registration process.
- Now go to portal.arellia.com and there will be a link on the right hand side to request an evaluation license. If the link is not there then click the Sign In button again and logon again.
Installing Arellia Trial Licenses
Installing Arellia Trial/Evaluation licenses is not done through the Symantec Installation Manager (SIM). These licenses are installed through the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) Certificates snap-in for 6.x and 7.0 Arellia solution version. See Licensing Update in Arellia 7.1 Solutions for 7.1 versions.
Below are directions on getting the Certificates snap-in running in the MMC.
- Click Start > Run. Enter "MMC" and click OK.
- Once the MMC Console window opens, click File > Add/Remove Snap-in.
- The Add/Remove Snap-in window opens. Click the Add button.
- The Add Standalone Snap-in window opens. Click Certificates and Add.
- The Certificates snap-in window opens. Click Computer account and click Next.
- The Select Computer window opens. Click Local computer (the computer the console is running on) and click Finish.
- In the Add Standalone Snap-in window. Click Close.
- In the Console window under Console Root, expand the Certificates (Local Computer) item, select the folder Altiris Licensing (or in most cases the licenses could also be put in the Arellia Licensing folder; see the note at the beginning of this page).
Now the certificate snap-in is installed and available for use.
To install Licenses
- To install a license, save the attachement to the email you received in a location available to the SMP server. It must be saved with a .cer extension. Please note the default extension the file is sent with is ._cer so this needs to be changed to .cer (remove the underscore.)
- Right click on the Arellia Licensing folder in the Certificates snap-in in the MMC (from the above directions) and select All Tasks and then Import.
- Browse to the certificate(s) saved from the email and select one. Note: If they are not saved with the .cer extension they will not show in the file find window. If they do not appear in the file find window please either resave or change the file name to have the .cer extension.
- Click Next or Continue and the certificate will be installed and recognized by the SMP.
- Repeat steps 2-4 for another certificate.
If your file attachment (the .cer file) is denied by your email filter or client
- Copy just the text of the certificate from the email. Just the actual certificate information as below from the beginning character to the end character of the certificate (It must of course include all the characters in the certificate. A single missing or added character will invalidate the certificate). Do not include the Begin Certificate or the End Certificate notices. NOTE: The below text is not a valid certificate.

- Then open a new Notepad instance and paste in the information.
- Select Save or Save As and change the type from Text Document (.txt) to All Files (.*).
- Put in an appropriate name and end with the .cer extension as the example "LSS_10_1_2010.cer".
- This file can then be used in the MMC certificates plug-in as described about in this article.
